EWR: 23, It's A Movie and a Blog Post

(FYI: The movie starred Jim Carrey and made me completely loony for a solid week. Moving on. )

Welcome to the December 27, 2009 edition of Everything Worth Reading. Whoo-hoo! Last post of the year, and of the decade! My heart leapt with joy as I read through the linkage, finding some really hot stuff. Then it sank when it got into the spam, business, and how-to (really, Gracie, it's not gonna happen). Then it rose once more with tales of lard and beer. Ah, it's the little things, isn't it?

Jim Murdoch presents Haiku and its related forms: an introductory essay posted at The Truth About Lies, saying, "Haiku has become increasingly popular in recent years. On the surface it's a simple form of poetry but thousands of words have been written about what an acceptable haiku is and most of these begin with a discussion of whether the number of syllables makes any difference in an English haiku. This essay is no different. It begins by asking that question and then discusses the fundamentals of writing haiku followed by an extensive glossary and many links."

Phillip Jeffers presents The Suffering of Modern Travelled Youth ? by Oliver Mitchell posted at The Global Guru articles & travel blog.

Susan Gaissert
presents The Tragedy of the Birthers posted at My Political Side, saying, "This is something I felt passionate about, and I very much enjoyed writing the piece."

Ryan Murphy
presents Forever will we climb the monkey bars posted at Eleven Degrees North.

Um? Yeah, this is about Star Trek without really being about Star Trek.

A Markle
presents About Death and Housekeeping posted at Andrew Markle.

I thought housekeeping was death. We'll never know. I kept this in because I thought it would be a good read only to find that the link is 404'd. Dangit! A Markle, resubmit!

C. J. Stegall-Evans
presents Writing and the Art of Procrastination posted at Writing as a Sacred Art.

Walter J. Shumate
presents DeBloWriMo Day 3 - A Little Bit Fruity posted at WalterShumate.net, saying, "A humorous essay as to why I like fruitcake."

Fruitcake is fun.

Where are all the poetical prodigies? What is there about the nature of poetry that stops youngsters creating works of genius? There have been young poets in the past who have been successful, a few have even become successful as adults but they're very much the exceptions. Is it simply lack of life experience or is there more holding them back?"

Most of the time. But why? There are so many magazines and e-zines on the go and most of them don't have the greatest readerships so what is the chance of people chancing upon your poem in both places? And if they did, would that be such a bad thing? And what counts as published anyway? If there is no chance of rejection does publication count? And what does one do with all these used poems then?"

EWR: Eighteen, Welcome To Adulthood

Welcome to the July 26, 2009 edition of Everything Worth Reading. I'm aware that today is July 28th. Mea culpa. My Sunday involved a massive hangover after three hours of sleep due to large free drinks on the last night of NYC's Knitting Factory. As for our carnival, I sifted through a helluva lot of irrelevant posts this month. Here's a hint--if your post begins with "How To," then it is a How-To-Post and not for this carnival. Yes? Yes. Thanks to everyone who submitted good writing stuff. It's all below for everyone to enjoy.

SmallTownSim presents What stands up- sometimes falls down posted at Joy's Journey To Wellness, saying, "JJ2W is an on-going journal that shares the ups, downs, disappointments and victories of living with chronic pain/illness. Jack Clifton presents Refinishing a Redwood Deck posted at How to Build a Deck, saying, "The problem with having a planter in the middle of a deck is that it completely chopped up the space and made the deck far less useful than it otherwise might have been. A six foot by six foot planter almost in the center of an otherwise flat wood deck that was about 20 feet by 28 feet in overall dimensions was little short of idiotic, but I guess that everything is in the eye of the beholder."

A how-to in personal narrative form. This is how to write and teach simultaneously.

Michael Fridman presents The “MAN” Experience posted at The "MAN" Experience.

Michael Cohen presents Differences Betwen Men And Women Catch Spouse Cheating posted at Differences Between Men And Women, saying, "How men and women view cheating differently."

If everyone would simply go by the dictionary definition, we wouldn't have a debacle.

Aetius Romulous presents It’s Spring, and ‘Luke’ is in the Air… posted at ScreamBucket.

I was hoping the title of this post meant that a single man would fall into my lap when I clicked the link. That didn't happen, but I did get to see a shirtless hunk. Oh, good writing, too.

Jim Murdoch presents Read, read, read and then read some more posted at The Truth About Lies, saying, "Newbie writers are usually encouraged to "read, read, read and then read some more," but just how much reading do your need to do to become a writer? Is reading overrated? Could you not get by watching a lot of tele?"

AdmirableIndia.com presents Bhilai to Raipur on bike: Chapter 3: Telibandha Talab, Raipur and Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial Museum, Raipur: Part 1 posted at AdmirableIndia.com.

GrrlScientist presents Land of the Lost Souls: My Life on the Streets posted at Living the Scientific Life, saying, "The homeless are everywhere in New York City. I run across them every day while riding public transit, while walking around the city and while using wireless in the public libraries. After a few conversations with homeless people, I've learned that most of them avoid shelters because of the risk of violent crime there. So where do they sleep? Where do they go to get a shower and clean clothes? Are all homeless people either crazy or crackheads? How did these people end up living on the streets in the first place? Don't they have families and friends? This is my review of a new book by Cadillac Man, who lived on the streets of NYC for 16 years."

Vanessa Wolf presents Confucius say: When glass eye fall in soup, remove with spoon posted at Wide Awake in Wonderland.

Madeleine Begun Kane presents Dogged Journalism posted at Mad Kane's Political Madness.

Mauzzie presents the superficial one! « Ponderer posted at Ponderer, saying, "Looks or Fashion? Looks, of course!"

EWR: Fourteen Times The Goodness

Welcome to the March 29, 2009 edition of Everything Worth Reading on March 28. Yes, I'm a day early; I'll be away from the computer tomorrow, so instead of making you wait longer, I'm posting early.

Save more than several submissions from someone named Farid who doesn't grasp the concept of "please submit once per carnival" nor the idea of "writing," I found almost too many good posts to choose from. Kudos, bloggers!

Thomas Peep presents Cuban or Rainman? posted at Thomas Peep's Daily News™.

Chris presents Starting a new life in Australia, part 1 posted at Home I Own, saying, "How I started a new life in a strange country carrying nothing but 2 suitcases."

POST OF THE MONTH

Mauzzie presents mushroom sauce and (maybe) something more « Ponderer posted at Ponderer, saying, "Oh well. Hello all!"

JennH presents The New Year’s Eve Party posted at Mixed Metaphor.net, saying, "A fictional short story about a woman who rings in the New Year in a manner she could not have foreseen."

If this story were true life and I were the woman, the "manner I could not have foreseen" would refer to something like a normal night in which I do not get plastered and pass out on a shag carpet in a skeevy basement. Maybe that's TMI.

J. Cullen presents It Must Be The Jewelry Store Ads posted at Life's dewlaps.

All about the ring. Not the one that kills people in Japanese lore.

Raising Whiskers presents Cats Toilet Training - Litter Box - Toilet Training posted at Cat Care Tips, saying, "Yes, you can train your cat to use the toilet."

While this carnival is not about how-to posts, I couldn't not include this one. I mean, a cat! on a toilet!

Burak Bilgin presents A Hint for Men in Modern Times posted at Distiller's Corner, saying, "Women have freedom of choice, and men don’t have any other option but to respect this freedom, and to do their best to be the chosen one. And the problem starts right here."

Jacob Duchaine presents The Big Bang Theory posted at The Blog of Jacob Duchaine.

CBS has a sitcom with the same title. Go figure.

John Duke presents Happy 9th Anniversary posted at OrangeHornet>.

Get a new plan, Stan. You can just leave, Steve. Turn turn the knob, Bob. Try not to lick, Rick. I could go on all day with these.

steven germain presents One Page At A Time... posted at Rough Fractals, saying, "The act of writing, independent of the content, is a positive thing..."

Wayne Cross presents My First Scuba Diving Vacation posted at First Scuba Diving Vacation, saying, "Everybody who dives has to have a first diving experience. Mine was about twenty years ago of the Big Island of Hawaii with a group of my friends. None of us were certified. How could we be, since it was our first time? If we had been certified, at least we could have said we had previously dived to the bottom of some community pool back on the mainland."

I'm scared of drowning in my shower so I admire anyone who scubas.

Walter J. Shumate presents Humor - Things That Go SNRRRK In The Night posted at WalterShumate.net, saying, "My wife says I snore. She must be lying, I've never heard it."

Vanessa Wolf presents Forget the killer chimp: THIS is news! posted at Wide Awake in Wonderland.

Aetius Romulous presents Everyone’s a Winner, on Biggest Loser… « ScreamBucket posted at ScreamBucket.

The country offers a winter wonderland made possible by the Spanish Pyrenees Mountains."

This story describes one American's experiences in the medical system in Helsinki Finland after falling on the ice and seriously fracturing my right wrist and undergoing surgery."

Roma Hudson presents Indian Kokopelli posted at American Indian Culture.

I used to wish I were part Native American. Then I dated a guy who said he was, got a tattoo to honor it, and then found out he wasn't.

Who can turn down a post that includes Alec Baldwin? Not I.

EWR: Twelve Twelve Nothing Rhymes With Twelve!

Kinda like orange. Nothing rhymes with orange.

Welcome to the January 25, 2009 edition of Everything Worth Reading! I'm fresh off my break during which I flew to Mexico. Ole. It rained, it was windy, and then the dengue fever set in. I'm happy to be home and in my comfort zone of blogging.

Rani presents How to write a short story- Rough draft Thus Far posted at Rayray's writing.

JennH presents Still Holding Her Hand posted at Mixed Metaphor.net, saying, "A fictional story about a nervous bride."

Tony Huynh presents Roger Ebert is Right: Games are Not High Art…Yet at LimitlessUnits.com posted at LimitlessUnits.com, saying, "Some of you may have heard about Roger Ebert’s disparaging comments about video games. This may sound blasphemous, but in a way, I agree with Roger Ebert’s assessment of our industry. Video games are currently not high art and they are an inferior medium to film and literature. I am not saying that video games can never be “high art,” it is that games have not yet reached that point."

The most I know about video games is that I rock at Dance Dance Revolution on Wii.

Two cents on one cent. I crack myself up.

I usually don't include book reviews, but I also have reviewed July's book on Livin' The Dream, so I like to show others' opinions.

Steve Faber presents Belly Fat Loser » Wii Fit Games – Making Fat Loss Fun? posted at Belly Fat Loser.

I'm wondering if losing chub also means gaining a tan. You'll know what I mean when you check out the post.

Tom Tessin presents Window or Aisle Seat? Which Is The Best? posted at FAC Travel Blog, saying, "What seat is truly the best on an airline?"

Having recently come home from a trip to Mexico during which it rained and was cold and then my friend got sick and we had to come home a day late, I'd say that it doesn't matter where you sit, as long as you get home. I usually sit in the middle anyway because I'm little.

Raghu presents The man who was normal posted at Inside Life, saying, "The hospital had never seen such a case before. ...He had no ambitions, didn’t watch football or cricket, wasn’t interested in impressing anyone, didn’t have any ulterior motive, and most baffling of all, just wanted to live his life normally."

Again, because of recent events, I simply switch to "please God let me digest this properly mode."
